Chapter Eleven

Surveying the chaos that was her lounge room when she awoke at half past eight on Sunday morning, Delilah cursed Burrows for his zealousness. Every drawer had been emptied, contents haphazardly stacked on the floor. The papers in her study were worse. And the violation of the dresser in her bedroom was downright embarrassing. With a heavy sigh, Delilah began reorganising her possessions.

At eleven o’clock, her mobile heralded a call from Pablo.

“Hey Pabs,” she said, tucking the small handset under her chin as she continued filing paperwork in her study.

“Hey Dee,” Pablo sounded tired to Delilah’s ears.

“Are you okay?”

“I have a favour to ask of you,” Pablo countered her question.

“Sure, whatever you need!”

The funeral directors are coming over this afternoon… if it’s not too much to ask, could you be here?” Pablo asked.

“Of course! Let me have a shower and I’ll be right over,” Delilah said, dropping the paperwork and trying not to let Pablo hear her sudden anxiety in her voice. This wasn’t the time to let her emotions rule her. She had to be strong for Pablo.

“Thanks Dee…”

“I’ll see you soon,” Delilah said before disconnecting. Hastily slipping into the shower to wash away the morning’s cleaning work, Delilah considered the imminent funeral. There would have to be something red. It was Carlos’ favourite colour. Delilah remembered helping a grieving Carlos choose flower arrangements for Josephina’s funeral, two years ago.

Now it was time to grieve for Carlos.

Dressed in her comfortable jeans and a maroon sweater, Delilah knocked on Pablo’s door less than an hour later. She noticed a black garbage bag stretched over the window pane to the right of the door. What was that about? Delilah’s attention was torn away from the conundrum as Pablo opened the door, similarly attired in jeans and a red tee-shirt.

“Thanks again for coming Dee,” he said as he stepped aside to let her enter.

“Pabs, I wouldn’t have let you face this on your own,” Delilah said, giving him a quick hug as she passed into the foyer.

“I was just throwing together a sandwich, want one?” Pablo said, leading Delilah into his kitchen. Delilah loved this kitchen. It was more spacious and lit better than her cramped one. She saw the bread and cold meat waiting on the island countertop.

“Sure,” she answered, settling onto a bar stool at the bench rather than the small breakfast table. Pablo layered cold turkey and salad onto wholemeal slices, not needing Delilah to instruct him further. How many Sunday brunches had they shared over the last ten years? Enough to know what salad options the other preferred. Sliding hers towards her and sitting down with his, they ate in silence.

Delilah was acutely aware of her inability to make small talk with the afternoon ahead looming closer.

“You remembered Dad’s favourite colour…” Pablo said suddenly, tossing aside his unwanted crusts.

Delilah fidgeted with the hem of her maroon sweater.

“Yeah… it felt right to wear it today,” Delilah replied.

“Same…” Pablo agreed.

Hearing a knock on the door, she saw Pablo stiffen. Delilah laid a hand over his.
